Aspirations of Iranian Women and Girls: Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Iranian Women’s Movement

Under the law, Iranian women face serious discrimination, yet they have managed social mobility, presence and inclusion, while challenging restrictive laws. Join us for a panel discussing both Iranian women’s status and live experience and the recent developments in the Iranian women’s movement, including its digital activism, transforming demands and formidable obstacles.

  • Nazila Fathi, Author and Former New York times Correspondent based in Iran
  • Nahid Motie, Scholar/Woman’s Rights Activist & Member of Women’s Committee of the Iranian Sociological Association
  • Sussan Tahmasebi, Director of FEMENA and Iranian Women’s Rights Activist
  • Moderated by SISI Professor Shadi Mokhtari

Following the panel discussion, we will screen the documentary film “The Girls” and have a discussion with the Director, Fery Malek Madani, who traveled to nine girls schools across Iran to discuss their dreams and what they understood to be their rights. Her team equipped the girls with cameras and asked that they take photos, while the documentary, “The Girls” chronicles their conversations and accompanying photography for an intimate snapshot of life for todays Iranian schoolgirls.

The exhibit of photos taken by the girls featured in the film is on display at the American University School of International Service, Atrium, 9:00 am-5:00 pm September 27 and 28th.
