Following the attacks by HTS militias on the Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Asrafieh in Aleppo starting on January 6th, we as the Women’s Initiative ‘I Need Peace’ (Barışa İhtiyacım Var Kadın İnisiyatifi) founded in Turkey on the basis of organising for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish issue and in order to put into practice women’s peace politics, drafted the international call to action which you may find below. In this statement, we tried to explain the consequences of allowing the slaughter of Kurds after Alawites and the Druze with the brazen support of Turkey and tacit consent of international powers, the heavy cost of legitimising remnants of ISIS in Syria. Since the day we drafted this call, the situation has grown harsher and more critical. Although the SDF pulled out of the towns of Deir Hafer and Maskanah on January 17th as a result of US-led negotiations, the HTS did not halt its aggression. It was announced on January 18th that the SDF would be withdrawing from former ISIS stronghold Raqqa and Deir az-Zor as well. But all of this was not enough to stop Kurdish majority areas and towns such as Hasakah and Kobani from being targeted by the HTS before the eyes of the world. In a meeting in Damascus on January 19th, Kurds were offered no choice but complete surrender – to hand over their weapons to jihadists and accept their fate. At the same time, videos were circulated on social media showing ISIS fighters released from detention centers such as al-Shaddadi prison in Raqqa in the space of a day after the heavy price Kurds paid for years in the battle against ISIS, and these ISIS members not losing a moment to take up arms against the Kurds. United Nations experts have warned against a high resurgence risk of ISIS. Graphic images of Kurdish women taken hostage and resistance fighters decapitated were posted across social media.
The Surah Al-Anfal, a chapter from the Quran and the name of a brutal campaign against the Kurds in 1988 by Saddam Hussain re-emerged in a religious directive issued in Syria, by which the HTS deemed attacks against Rojava a “conquest”. In the wake of these new developments, we call upon the world once again.
This war is also about the kind of world we want to live, and this is particularly true for us women: Is it a world where jihadism becomes state-sponsored just because it fits the imperialist bill, which prefers Islamists under its tutelage to a place like Rojava where communities of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds can come together to determine their own future, and because it aligns with the regional expansionism and religious world view of the AKP government in Turkey, where massacres are considered legitimate if committed at the hands of hand-groomed jihadists and no woman feels safe? Or a world where no one is discriminated against for their identities or beliefs in a secular order, where equality is truly possible as a result of our own struggle and not as a ‘gift’ monopolised by imperialist
states? We choose the second. We call upon all women’s and feminist organisations across the world sign on to this petition and endorse our three urgent demands, as well as to put pressure on states and particularly US, Turkey and Syrian Consulates/Embassies across the world:
1) Halt all attacks against Kurdish people and other communities in Syria! End the siege on Kobani
and allow the entry of life-sustaining supplies now!
2) Recognize the right of the Kurds and other peoples in Syria to self-determination and to govern
themselves as they see fit, and put an end to bloody foreign interventions seeking to curtail this right!
3) Stop war crimes against the civilian population, resistance fighters and women! Hold ISIS and HTS
members (and affiliated groups) accountable for their crimes!
