“Legal discrimination and violence against women are challenges across the country and in Kurdistan too. There was a 30 percent increase in the rate of child marriage among young girls aged 10 to 14 years old compared to the previous year. In addition, the parliament is passing a bill to boost population growth in the country without foreseeing any measures to manage or provide support for the shift in population, which drastically affects women. “

Shiva Nazar Ahari is an award-winning WHRD, blogger, and journalist from Iran. Despite being imprisoned due to her human rights work on several occasions, Shiva continues her activism in support of women and human rights. Shiva spoke at the FEMENA‘s parallel event at the CSW 65 on March 2021 and discussed the situation of women in Iran and how the political climate and sanctions affect the ability of WHRDs to organize and how they have developed creative strategies to defend their gains and demand their rights.
