Peace with Iran
The Director of FEMENA, Sussan Tahmasebi, spoke at the Peace with Iran Summit where she discussed how the polarized debate on Iran has made it difficult for activists inside Iran, especially women’s movement activists to be heard at the international level. Despite facing pressures from all sides however, Iranian civil society activists are forging a third path, to advocate for human rights, including women’s rights, as well reject military intervention and sanctions against Iran. It is imperative that the international community hears the voices from within Iran, which will be much more nuanced and complex. These activists are taking great risks to speak up, and it is our responsibility to ensure that their demands are heard, she stressed. Tahmasebi also provided an overview of what the Iranian women’s movement is doing to advocate for women’s rights inside the country and how sanctions are impacting the sector negatively.
